| Weeklong Events Promote Healthy Body Image
UCSB Healthy Eating and Living program faculty adviser Joanna Hill said college students are particularly vulnerable to having an eating disorder or acquiring a negative body image. "Eating disorders usually begin or happen before the age of 25 so the college-aged population is the most likely age to develop an eating disorder," Hill said. "This is the time where one has the highest chance of getting a negative body image, so this is the age where it is important to get the right information on the subject of eating disorders." Hill also said that the beach location of UCSB and cultural beauty stereotypes that are allegedly prevalent in California may serve as major factors that make UCSB students particularly susceptible to body image issues. "I think that [the pressure for aesthetic perfection] has a lot to do with the California atmosphere," Hill said.
Low-Calorie Sweeteners Are Helpful In Weight Control, Confirmed By ...
A recent review of the scientific literature concluded that low-calorie (or no-calorie) sweeteners may be of help in resolving the obesity problem. Although they are not magic bullets, low-calorie sweeteners in beverages and foods can help people reduce their calorie (energy) intakes. "Low-calorie sweeteners reduce the energy of most beverages to zero and lower the energy density of many foods," said study co-author, Dr. Adam Drewnowski, Director, Center for Public Health Nutrition at the University of Washington. "Every dietary guideline these days tells us to bulk up, hydrate, and consume foods with fewer calories but more volume." The study by Bellisle and Drewnowski, published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, evaluated a variety of laboratory, clinical and epidemiological studies on low-calorie sweeteners, energy density and satiety.
Coach's Corner: Santos in eighth year at soph helm
My junior year we took second and my senior year we went undefeated in league and finished second in the (Sac-Joaquin Section) and lost our (Northern California playoff) game by one point all the way up in Redding. We played our section championship game at UC Davis. Now the girls play those games at Arco Arena; we got Davis, but it was still exciting. UD: The section final that year, a 50-42 loss to Del Oro of Loomis, was frustrating for Sonora. AS: Our center, Anne Zimmerman, got into foul trouble. We should have won that game. UD: How did you get into coaching? AS: I ran in to Shelly Kiriluk (then the head sophomore coach) one day and she asked if I would come down and be her assistant. When she left I became the head coach (in 2000-01). UD: Kiriluk, who returned as the varsity assistant last season, is an outstanding coach.

Maybe CCA should have asked the three rising stars how they would feel about serving as photo advertisements for the school. James Syhabout, who heads PlumpJack Café's kitchen, is the most measured in his evaluation of CCA but he graduated in 1999, before the school was purchased by a large for-profit education company. "I know the school has definitely changed since I've been there," he said. Tim Luym, who cooks at the Poleng Lounge in Nopa, said he found the school "a little deceptive." He says no one explained that many graduates of the expensive school go on to kitchen jobs that pay $10 per hour. "They don't really give you the reality of how much you'll be making," he says. "They never give you financials." The third chef, Chris Kronner of the Slow Club in Potrero Hill, says the school does not have the best interest of the students at heart.
