What’s the point of stopping me for walking home?

It's amazing how little power can go to someone's head. Exhibit 1A: The Douglas Police Department. As I write this it is 2:09 a.m.Here is how a recent Saturday night went:I attended the girls' basketball game against Cody. They won by 20.I drove home from the high school and made myself spaghetti for dinner. I watched Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by myself. Around 9 p.m. I got a call from a friend, notifying me that he and others had just arrived at the LaBonte. I drove down to meet them.I arrived at the local gathering place around 10 p.m. I had a few drinks (Bud Light on tap), originally planning on just having a beer and returning home. Instead, I enjoyed myself, indulged in a few libations, and as soon as they blinked the lights signaling last call, my two friends and I decided to leave.

Washington In more bad economic news, consumer confidence and home prices posted sharp declines while higher costs for such basics as food and energy left wholesale inflation rising at the fastest pace in a quarter-century. The reports raised the threat of a return of "stagflation," in which economic growth stagnates at the same time that inflation continues racing ahead. The New York-based Conference Board reported that its confidence index fell to 75.0 in February, down from a revised January reading of 87.3.

Dog survives avalanche, a week in the rugged backcountry

HELENA, Mont. (AP) Tom Pick saw the frightened look on his dog's face as the snow gave way, but he could only watch as a small avalanche swept the black Labrador retriever down the mountainside. ``I'll probably always see her eyes just looking up at me as she slid down into that thing,'' Pick said in an interview this week. ``You could tell that she was scared.'' That was the start of a weeklong ordeal for 3-year-old Lizzie, who somehow survived a week in the snowy backcountry before being spotted at a lake about 5 miles away. Pick, who had searched the avalanche chute in vain for the dog, said he and his wife are ``both still kind of pinching ourselves, afraid that it's a dream or something. We still don't know exactly what transpired.'' Lizzie was with Pick as he went backcountry skiing Jan.

Plan: Video game gyms could get kids moving

Health clubs and schools are now turning to these innovative technology-driven activities to get kids moving.

"'Exergames' are video games that promote exercise. 'Interactive fitness games' are technology-driven games that also promote exercise, but don't require a screen," says Lisa Hansen, PhD candidate at the University of South Florida and co-director of their fitness lab.

Put a bunch of these games together in an arcade-like atmosphere and you have an "XRKade," which promote a fun and social experience, she says. Only a handful of these arcades currently exist in the U.S., but many more are expected to open in 2008.

To some, using technology to motivate kids to exercise might seem counterintuituve. But kids love games.

"We have found that they never sit down when playing the various games in our XRKade lab," says Hansen.

DINING OUT:

The day we went, we found slices of apple tart, Fruiti di Bosco, a tart with pastry cream and several kinds of berries dusted with powdered sugar, and a Tiramisu Cup, a velvety tiramisu in a small glass bowl. Each was $3.75.The specialty-drink menu hangs on the back wall, and it takes time to drink it all in, if you will pardon the pun. There’s espresso in a beautiful tiny china cup for $1.50 and Armenian coffee for $2. Several drinks come in two sizes, like teas for $1.25 to $1.75, some in three sizes like café latte, caramel Macchiato or Chai latte for $2.45 to $3.25.They offer Bellagio cocoa and gourmet mocha to make drinks like the rich hot mocha ($2.45 to $3.25), more hot chocolate than coffee. It also comes in vanilla.Ice blended drinks, when it warms up again in a few days, run from $2.45 to $5.25 and offer, among the standards, the Mocha Mocha, a shot of espresso with chocolate-mocha syrup, milk and topped with whipped cream.

Nutritious diet helps keep bones strong

Living a long and healthy life requires keeping the body in good condition, including the skeleton. After age 50 the risk for osteoporosis and bone fractures increases greatly.

Consuming adequate calcium, vitamin D, protein and a host of other essential nutrients helps to reduce the risk, but many people might need the additional help of bone medications.

The most common drugs currently used in the U.S. are the well-studied bisphosphonate drugs such as Fosamax and Boniva. Recent news about rare but serious side effects of these effective drugs has been confusing for consumers, and there is growing interest in alternatives.

Question: Are there any new alternatives to bisphosphonate drugs?

Answer: A drug called strontium ranelate is commonly prescribed in several European countries.

Bourbon Street 'closing' is a show in itself

We should take a little time to explain our "traditions" to them when they have a puzzled look or make erroneous statements or assumptions.

The traditional police "closing" of Bourbon St. is not a show of force, but a reminder that Mardi Gras ends when Ash Wednesday begins. And,finally, I certainly remember when our police force were not so polite in their tactics when attempting the shutdown.

Flick's closing store

Competition to the north and the south has led longtime Northern Kentucky grocer Flick's Food to close its Hebron location in the Flick-built Tanners Station shopping center, which opened in 2004.

The store on North Bend Road will close by the end of this month, a company official said Monday.

"We are closing just the one for now," co-owner Dave Flick said. "We are not sure what we're going to do with the other."

Madeleine is more than a news story, she symbolises the dangers all ...

Like sitting in your back garden" & "Even if we'd been in the next room" Nothing like sitting in your back garden! & If you'd been in the next room the patio door would have been locked AND the 'abductor' would not have been able to observe your HalfHourTrips back and forth to <cough> check on your children. I wonder how the McCann's can keep a straight face; when now it is now clear to everyone, that they waited until their three babies were a-slumbering before they sneaked out, leaving their dear little trusting children alone night after night after night - behind an open door! The ultimate betrayal! .
