Cod liver oil (yes, it actually comes from the livers of the cod) is the fish oil that's richer in vitamin D (the sunshine vitamin) and vitamin A. You always have options. Increasingly, health providers are becoming better advisers. Check out the January issue of Portland Monthly magazine (www.portlandmonthlymag.com) and an article titled "Modern Miracles Meet Ancient Cures." It talks about how effective treatment can become when conventionally trained physicians and alternative healers work together. There's another way to get delicious omega-3 protection. It happens when you sit down to a dinner of baked salmon. In our household it's almost always enhanced by a liberal splash of turmeric. Beef Recall Includes Meat Sent To Some Fast Food Restaurants
It's the biggest beef recall in history with 143-million pounds getting pulled. A meat company is now under investigation for animal abuse, some of which was caught on tape. The undercover video shows cows at a California slaughter house too sick or injured to walk on their own, a clear violation of federal inspection laws. Now the beef, produced over a 2-year period is being recalled. Some of the beef was used in school lunch programs, including some in the Northside School District."As far as we know, none of it was served to students at all, said NISD spokesman Pascual Gonzalez. "We checked the boxes, the case number by lot number, and all of that has been accounted for and is in the warehouse."The company also provided beef to two fast food chains, Jack-In-The-Box and In-N-Out restaurants, and grocery stores.Since eating fast food is a way of life for many of us, News 4 did some checking to find out if any of the recalled beef was sent to any Jack-In-The-Box locations in San Antonio.
Pet Store "Horrified" and "Appalled" by Puppy Mills
All of our puppies are given health checks by our store veterinarian when they become part of our family and before joining their new families. Our puppies are all sold with a health warranty, and are not available to go home to their new families until they have been cleared by a veterinarian. It has been brought to our attention that our permit to sell animals has expired and we have remedied this issue. The permit fee went inadvertently unpaid due to a clerical error. Upon completion of an inspection by Animal Services, which is scheduled for Thursday, Pets of Bel Air will reopen.Pets of Bel Air has been a trusted neighborhood business for many years. Every employee at Pets of Bel Air is an animal lover, as evidenced by the care and love we show our puppies and kittens each day; the healthy environment we provide; and the respect we show each of you.
Christopher Magryta column: Back to old-school parenting
As an advocate for the health of the children of Rowan County, I want to help give parents the tools they need to help their children live a life in wellness. I want to encourage parenting with responsibility. Let's look at the state of our youth's nutrition today. Our children are more obese than ever, prone to more chronic disease and relatively unaware of the poor quality of life that awaits them. Whose fault is this? Corporate fast food? Our work schedules? School vending machines/lunches? I think not, although maybe partly. The fault lies with our collective inability to make healthy choices and to educate our children to do the same. Simply, we do not parent effectively. How does one effect change? I have been fighting this battle in my head and at Salisbury Pediatrics for nine years.
Government orders biggest-ever U.S. beef recall
Officials said it was the largest beef recall in the United States, surpassing a 1999 ban of 35 million pounds of ready-to-eat meats. No illnesses have been linked to the newly recalled meat, and officials said the health threat was probably small. The recall will affect beef products dating to Feb. 1, 2006, that came from Chino-based Westland/Hallmark Meat Co. , the federal agency said. Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer said his department has evidence that Westland did not routinely contact its veterinarian when cattle became non-ambulatory after passing inspection, violating health regulations. "Because the cattle did not receive complete and proper inspection, Food Safety and Inspection Service has determined them to be unfit for human food and the company is conducting a recall," Schafer said in a statement.

More dangerous dogs on our streets
But you can "never blame the dog for its behaviour", he added. The NHS statistics show the number of dog attack victims in England attending A&E has risen by 43 per cent in the last four years to nearly 3,800 a year. Hospitalisation of children and young people has risen by a fifth, with 58 per cent more adults being admitted to A&E as a result of dog attacks over the same four-year period. The hospital admission statistics revealed a strong regional variation. The Greater London Authority, Metropolitan Police, RSPCA and Battersea Dogs and Cats Home are launching a campaign on responsible dog ownership. Wandsworth is among the local councils using bylaws and ASBOs to deal with owners who fail to control their dogs. Liberal Democrat health spokesman Norman Lamb called for a review of the Dangerous Dogs Act, saying more needed to be done to make people aware of the risks of irresponsible dog ownership.
